Fernando Alonso's 300th grand prix entry ended in what has become all too familiar circumstances, with his McLaren losing power and forcing him to retire from the Canadian Grand Prix. Alonso had looked set for a points finish, despite another dismal qualifying.

After moving to the brink of the points from 14th on the grid, Alonso's car began to sound sick on lap 42 and his team confirmed he would have to retire.

"Sorry mate. Gutted," said his race engineer Will Joseph after Alonso reported a loss of power.

It is Alonso's second DNF in a row after his points-scoring start to 2018 was snapped in Monaco last time out.

Alonso will likely have a happier time of it in seven days' time as he enters the Le Mans 24 Hours with favourites Toyota.

The two-time F1 world champion is bidding to win motorsport's 'Triple Crown', hoping to add Le mans to his two Monaco wins.

If he is successful in the WEC showpiece, he would only need to win the Indianapolis 500 to match Graham Hill's unique feat.
