Daniel Ricciardo has warned Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen that he will be "picked apart" if he continues to make errors in 2018. The Dutchman said would "headbutt" people questioning his error-strewn campaign ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, only serving to focus attention on him.

Verstappen looked to have gotten over a tricky start to the campaign with a podium finish in Spain, but Monaco bit back last time out as Verstappen crashed in Saturday's practice session.

It meant he had to start from the back of the grid and could only finish ninth in a race that Ricciardo won, converting Red Bull's superior pace in the principality.

It leaves Verstapppen with less than half of his team-mate's points tally after six races, but Ricciardo believes he can cope with the extra attention.

"Now he's in the spotlight – obviously the FP3 crash [in Monaco] wasn't a small error – but any small error from now on he's probably going to get a little bit picked apart for," said Ricciardo.

"There will be times when it's probably going to be frustrating but at the end of the day I guess it's in his control.

"I think he's pretty headstrong, he won't let it get to him too much. I understand where it's coming from."
