VIDEO: Leclerc and Hartley in HORROR smash
Charles Leclerc and Brendon Hartley gave the Monaco Grand Prix an exciting full stop as they were forced into a scray DNF in the closing stages of Sunday's race. Leclerc's brakes failed on his Sauber, leaving him as a passenger as he smashed into the back of Hartley's Toro Rosso coming out of the tunnel.
The pair ran on the fringes of the points for much of the race, Hartley impressively circulating in 11th for much of a race he had qualified 16th for.
But their races were ended in an instant - with Hartley being warned that Leclerc was suffering an issue, a puff of smoke from the Sauber's front-left wheel the telling sign as the Monegasque driver failed to stop his car into the chicane.
Leclerc managed to limit the damage by running up the kerb and into the Armco barrier, lowering the impact on Hartley's car.
However, it was still enough to snap Leclerc's front-left wheel off and leave Hartley's car with its rear wing dangling off.
"Four laps before [the incident], I felt like the brake pedal was getting very, very long," Leclerc said after crashing out of his first home race in F1.
"It was very inconsistent, even putting the same amount of [pressure] on the pedal, it was not decelerating and then decelerating, not decelerating and then decelerating. It was very difficult to manage and then at one point, they [the brakes] just gave up."
Hartley added: "Charles and I spoke afterwards and he said he lost the brakes. It's pretty frustrating, but that's Monaco. We were strong all weekend apart from Q1, where we didn't get it all together. I was happy with how I was driving today but ultimately it wasn't meant to be."
