Red Bull's Horner: I expect an apology from BOTH drivers

Red Bull chief Christian Horner has said he expects a full and frank apology from both drivers after Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen's crash which led to both men being retired from an action-packed and thrilling Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku.

As is Red Bull philosophy, both drivers were allowed to compete with each other, which led to wheels touching in the first few laps.

But the race for both men was over after Verstappen weaved in two different directions and Ricciardo braked too late, slamming into the back of the Dutchman, leaving both cars sprawled helplessly in the middle of the track.

Horner had stormed past Sky Sports presenters to compose himself, but post-race he issued a clear message to both men that their actions will not be tolerated.

He said: "Both drivers screwed up and they’ll both be apologising. sometimes they forget it's a team sport. We discussed about them giving each other space. this was the culmination of two guys taking things in their own hands which shouldn’t happen.

There were three incidents in the Grand Prix. they touched wheels and had been told to calm it down. Their engineers are working with the drivers but we don’t want to interfere in letting them go wheel to wheel and they've been good up to this point.

"We've always said if you give each other room we'll let you race, they'd done that up to that incident. I'm not apportioning blame one way or the other they're both to blame."

Horner also appeared most frustrated that the good work the rest of the team had put in over the weekend had been ruined in this one moment.

He added: "It’s the team that miss out.

"Our intention is to let them keep racing but they’ve got to show the team and each other respect. They’ve been reminded they're part of a team and they have a responsibility, they're both highly paid individuals, they have to act with the team's interest not their own. The message was delivered very strongly.

"In Barcelona they’ll be fine there's no doubt, they're both in the dog house and they will be in the factory to apologies to all the staff prior to Barcelona."
