Grosjean would 'love' to see a budget cap

Romain Grosjean has confessed that he would "love" to see a budget cap introduced in Formula One which would be designed to level the playing field among the constructor teams, as he reckons it would be "great for the show" if more teams were involved in wins.

Liberty Media, the owners of Formula One, have proposed radical new plans which will see spending capped among the teams, and there has already been criticism from the larger teams such as Mercedes and Ferrari, with the Prancing Horse even routinely threatening to leave the sport altogether if the plans go ahead without compromise.

Grosjean, of Haas F1 Team, has found it difficult so far this campaign and has picked up no points as of yet, finding himself 17th in the driver rankings for 2018.

The prospect of a level playing field is something he would "love" to see, and has cited Moto GP as an example of a sport which has entertaining unpredictability.

"I love the idea of the budget cap," Grosjean told Globo.

"I'm a fan of MotoGP and if you look at the championship, (Cal) Crutchlow is No. 1 and (Johan) Zarco third. It's incredible because someone different can win in every race.

"I would love to see that in Formula 1. One race it's Mercedes, the next it's Ferrari and then Red Bull, and then Force India and maybe Haas.

"It's great for the show when you never know who will win. You want to watch it because it's exciting until the last lap."

The current version of the proposal from Liberty Media will see a budget of $150 million per season per team, with standardised engines also being part of their vision for a more competitive field.

The American organisation has already fielded criticism for their decision to limit engines to three per season as well as ditching the tradition of 'grid girls'.
