Wolff reveals last time he spoke to Hamilton about driver's future
Toto Wolff thinks the Lewis Hamilton-Mercedes partnership is the “obvious” one for both parties within F1, but has revealed that he hasn’t spoken to the Brit with regards to his future since December.
Hamilton won his sixth drivers’ championship in 2019 which put him one behind the record of seven held by Michael Schumacher.
However, his current deal runs out at the conclusion of the 2020 season, with questions naturally being raised as to whether he will extend to try and either match or surpass Schumacher’s record depending on his fortunes in 2019.
There were even strong rumours that he could move to Ferrari, but Wolff reckons Mercedes remains the best place for the six-time champion - even if they haven't chatted in a few months.
“I think it is the obvious pairing going forward,” he told Autosport about the partnership between Hamilton and Mercedes.
“We would like to have the fastest man in the car, and I know that Lewis wants to be in the fastest car so there’s an obvious mutual outcome.
“But you know, we travel around the world almost 10 months every year.

“We go on our nerves every second weekend. And what we do over winter is we leave each other in peace.
“The last conversation I had with him was in the evening before the Christmas party.
“We had a nice chat, that we would continue our discussion or start our discussion once he comes back from America and we have properly kicked off the season.
“I have great belief in the abilities of the team to attract the best drivers.
“And at the moment Lewis has proven that he is the best current driver with his six titles.”
Looking into the future beyond Hamilton, Wolff wants Mercedes to continue to build the best car in order to bring top talent into the team.
“And on the mid- and long-term, I would hope that we’re able to continue to provide technology to the best driver and attract them,” he continued.
