VIDEO: Wickens makes huge step in recovery from Pocono crash
Injured IndyCar driver Robert Wickens has shared a video of himself cycling for the first time since suffering multiple injuries in a sickening crash at Pocono Speedway last year as he continues to spread joy across social media with his recovery.
Wickens tagged wheels with the Andretti Autosport car of Ryan Hunter-Reay and went airborne into the perimeter wall before spinning violently back to the track via the fencing, which took two hours to be repaired.
The Canadian suffered fractures to both legs, his right arm and his spine in the awful incident, but his positive approach to his rehabilitation has been one of motorsport's more heart-warming tales.
His Schmidt Peterson Motorsports team have left a seat open for him to return, although it remain uncertain when he will make a comeback to racing.
However, his progress remains positive and Wickens shared a video of himself this week attempting to cycle for the first time since his injuries, with a brilliant result…
So... This happened today!!! ?????? I wanted to see if I could pedal on my own before a electric stimulation session. First time on a up right bike since the accident and I could pedal it! It’s been a great week so far!! #?????? #spinbike #rehab #progress pic.twitter.com/JhHBv3PGge — Robert Wickens (@robertwickens) January 31, 2019
Wickens impressed in his debut IndyCar season and topped the Rookie of the Year standings after taking four podiums in his first 14 races.
