Carey confirms F1 still planning second US GP
Liberty Media boss Chase Carey has reiterated their desire to have a second Grand Prix in the United States in the near future, despite Vietnam already being added to the calendar and plans for a Miami GP, as soon as next year, having been foiled.
It had been Liberty's desire to have the Miami Grand Prix positioned in October 2019 as the owners look to continue their expansion plans, but their bid was thwarted by the local authorities who questioned the various logistical headaches that would accompany a street race at that time of year.
In the end they were forced to admit defeat in the short term, and Liberty focused their energies instead on confirming Vietnam from 2020, while the Netherlands remain extremely keen to be added to capitalise on the popularity of Max Verstappen.
But speaking to publication Speed Week, Carey confirmed that despite Miami's pushback it is absolutely their intention to double their US offering - whether it takes place in Miami or somewhere else.
He said: "The plan is to have a second race in the US. But we are not just dealing with Miami, even if we are convinced that it would be a great project.
"The negotiations are going on. When it comes to street circuits there are many interests that need to come together and it takes time.
"The fan festival [held before the Austin GP helped, everyone thought the event was great. It was a positive step towards the race."
It is believed that a number of established Grand Prix venues could be under threat while Liberty investigates other avenues; Silverstone has an exit clause after 2019 which may be executed, while the likes of Brazil also appears under threat, while France and Germany have both disappeared from, and returned to, the calendar as of late.
