Vettel's 100th podium and what you missed from the Australian Grand Prix

Vettel's 100th podium and what you missed from the Australian Grand Prix

Sebastian Vettel's victory at the Australian Grand Prix came with a statistical milestone that proves the Ferrari star's calibre. Here's what else you might have missed from Sunday's action at Albert Park, including a farcical debut for the latest man in the door at Williams.

  • Vettel pipped Lewis Hamilton for his 48th F1 victory and his 100th podium finish. He's the fourth man to reach triple figures behind Alain Prost, record-holder Michael Schumacher and Hamilton.

  • Spare a thought for Sergey Sirotkin, though. His F1 debut was over after five laps for a totally bizarre reason. "You would not believe what happened – it was a plastic sandwich bag, which went into the rear-right brake duct," the Russian reported. The errant bag caused his brakes to overheat and fail into turn 13.

  • Valtteri Bottas fought back to eighth from 15th on the grid after his shunt in qualifying. The Mercedes' struggle with overheating in dirty air prevented him making up further places, suggesting that some of the Silver Arrows' old issues remain unresolved.

  • Honda enjoyed a pre-season of reputation repair at Toro Rosso, but that might be turning back the other way. Pierre Gasly labelled his power unit a "pain in the ass" after he was forced to retire. "The engine just switched off, it came back on again but I was really slow and I couldn’t upshift," explained Gasly.

  • Honda's old partners McLaren had no trouble, scoring fifth and ninth with their new Renault engines. Sporting director Eric Boullier said: "We had a trouble-free weekend, which is a relief after the issues we had in winter testing."

  • Charles Leclerc delivered an impressive 13th place on his debut for Sauber. "We maximised our potential and had a consistently good pace," the Ferrari junior said. "I was able to overtake some of the cars, which was fun."
