Vettel explains bizarre Monaco "bleeding" eye issue
Sebastian Vettel has explained the bizarre eye problem he suffered from during second practice for the Monaco Grand Prix.
The Aston Martin driver complained his eye was "bleeding" on team radio during FP2 in the Principality on his way to finishing 10th, 1.298secs adrift of Charles Leclerc's session-topping time.
On his vision issues, Vettel said: "I never had my eye bleeding but I didn't know what was going on.
"I had... in the first run, something got into my eye and it got worse in the second run. The team was quite nice and they made me an eyepatch. I probably think I will keep it and it will keep me safe for the rest of the weekend.
"It wasn't bleeding but tearing. I thought I was either emotional or something else is going on because there were just tears and tears and I was just blinking the whole lap. Not ideal on a track like this."
On how it was to drive at Monaco with the impairment, Vettel joked: "I don't recommend it. It is not as much fun as with two."
Vettel also reached the top 10 in the morning session during a much improved day in the AMR21 but expects the midfield to remain tough throughout the weekend.
"I was quite happy in the morning, we got into a rhythm quickly and then in the afternoon I lost a bit of view but overall it is okay, it will be tight," said Vettel.
"It is always tight here in the midfield so hopefully we can be at the forward end.
"Ideally, we can keep it up and get everything together. It is all about Saturday afternoon so a bit of time.
"We tried some bits. In Monaco as usual you always have a bit of stop-and-go and not getting in the laps, that is for everyone so it will matter on Saturday afternoon to get everything in that one lap."
