Schumacher "grateful" for following in his father's F2004 Ferrari footsteps
Mick Schumacher has expressed his gratitude for being given the opportunity to drive an iconic Ferrari made famous by his father Michael.
As part of Ferrari's 1,000th grand prix celebrations at Mugello at the weekend, F2 championship leader Schumacher was given the honour of celebrating Michael's legacy by firing up the F2004 and conducting a lap of the Scuderia-owned circuit.
The all-conquering car won 12 of the first 13 races en route to Schumacher senior clinching what proved to be the last of his five Formula 1 world titles with Ferrari.
Reflecting on an unforgettable experience, and writing in a guest column on the F2 website, Mick Schumacher said: "Obviously driving the Ferrari F2004 on Sunday was a very special moment for me.
"It’s such a great car and in my opinion one of the best ones in the history of F1. And driving it on a track like Mugello where the F2004 had done so many laps before made it even more special for me."
Schumacher junior declared the car itself, a classic V10 resplendent with its ear-splitting roar to be "simply amazing".
He added: "The sound, the downforce, the steering – it’s just amazing.
"It was really special for everyone involved, I think also for the mechanics who worked with my dad on this car 16 years ago. A great moment for me and I’m very thankful that I got this opportunity by Ferrari."
Schumacher is in line to further emulate his father by being promoted to F1 next year with a seat at either Alfa Romeo or Haas.
