Vettel becomes second driver in F1 history to surpass 3000 career points
The German's P7 finish in Spain was just enough to lift himself past a huge milestone
Sebastian Vettel has become the second driver ever after Lewis Hamilton to score 3000 points in his career, as the German finished seventh at the Spanish Grand Prix.
Starting from 11th, Vettel did well in his second stint on the soft tyre to stay competitive as long as he did, driving over half the race on the compound in a brave one-stop, earning the Driver of the Day award.
Since 2010, the points system changed to what we are used to now, with the winner getting 25 points rather than 10, as was the case before, and even less in the old days of Formula 1.
With Vettel hitting his stride that year as he won his first championship at the turn of the decade, he has more career points than the likes of Michael Schumacher, who scored almost all of his points in the old scoring system.
With 3,563 points, Hamilton is quite a long way clear of Vettel's 3,001, mainly due to Mercedes' historic dominance in the past six years.
In third place on the all-time scorers' list is Fernando Alonso with 1899 points, followed by Kimi Raikkonen - who has yet to score a point in 2020 - on 1859. Rounding out the top five is 2016 champion Nico Rosberg on 1594.5 points.
While only 16 of Vettel's 3,001 points have come in 2020, a statistic like this does remind people how great of an F1 driver the 53-time grand prix winner truly is.
