Spanish GP still going ahead as it stands

GPFans sources calm fears over Spanish GP cancellation

The Spanish Grand Prix is set to go ahead as planned despite the UK government announcing a mandatory two-week quarantine period for those returning from the country.

GPFans sources have indicated the latest guidelines issued by UK authorities will have no effect on the Spanish Grand Prix, the race set to take place on August 16.

Due to the rigorous Covid-19 testing régime implemented by Formula 1, the sport is exempt from government advice warning against "all non-essential travel to mainland Spain" and instructing the public to "quarantine on your return to the UK".

As a sport, F1 has completed over 15,000 Covid-19 tests, with only two returning positive results, although it was quickly confirmed that neither concerned party was a permanent member of personnel nor had they been in contact with the paddock and the teams.

On Friday, "due to the fluid nature of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, local restrictions and the importance of keeping communities and our colleagues safe", Formula 1 cancelled races in Canada, the USA, Mexico City and Brazil.

Although a cancellation appears to be unlikely at present, for the above reasons, it is inevitable that both the FIA and FOM [Formula 1 Management] will be paying close attention to the developing situation in Spain.
