Update on Ryan Newman condition after Daytona 500 crash

Newman 'awake and speaking'

Long term advocate for safety in motorsport Ryan Newman is 'awake and speaking' after being involved in a huge last lap crash in the NASCAR Daytona 500 on Sunday.

Veteran 42-year-old Newman, was leading the race when hit from behind, spun and flipped. Newman, while on his roof, was then hit by another car at over 200mph.

Newman was taken to hospital with a statement reading that the driver was in a serious but not a life threatening condition, and an update on Tuesday confirmed that Newman was now 'awake and speaking'.

"Ryan Newman remains under the care of doctors at Halifax Medical Centre in Daytona Beach, Florida. He is awake and speaking with family and doctors," read a statement from Newman's team, Roush Fenway Racing.

“Ryan and his family have expressed their appreciation for the concern and heartfelt messages from across the country. They are grateful for the unwavering support of the NASCAR community and beyond.”

Back in 2010, Newman was fined for stating that a large number of crashes had decided the championship and that NASCAR was 'not racing.'
