Monger makes racing return to Donington

Originally written by Joas van Wingerden. This version is a translation.

Billy Monger returned to racing at Donington Park in British Formula 3 action on Saturday, less than 18 months on from having both legs partially amputated as a result of injuries sustained in a huge crash at the same track.

Monger was racing in Formula 4 last April when he suffered a terrifying shunt, with life-altering consequences.

The 19-year-old has incredibly returned to racing in 2018, driving for Carlin with a specially adapted car that features a throttle button on his steering wheel.

A dream result appeared to be on the cards when Monger qualified on pole for the first race of the meet on Saturday.

However, a poor start dropped the Briton down to sixth place, as eventual race-winner Nicolai Kjaergaard took control.

Monger made up places to run fourth in the closing stages, but he was unable to snatch a podium finish late on.

Monger took a podium finish on his first race back from his injuries at Oulton Park earlier this year and also finished third in the final race of the recent meeting at Spa-Francorchamps.
