Former NASCAR teammate makes 'very strange' Kyle Busch admission

Former NASCAR Cup Series star Carl Edwards has made a 'very strange' admission regarding two-time champion and former teammate Kyle Busch.

Edwards and Busch spent two seasons alongside each other at Joe Gibbs Racing in 2015 and 2016 before the latter called time on his career, during which time Busch picked up his first Cup Series title.

Having seen him competing at the very top of the sport, Edwards has admitted that now he has returned to NASCAR as a pundit, it is peculiar to see Busch struggling so much.

The Richard Childress Racing driver is winless in the Cup Series since 2023 and is on a tough run of form right now, with just one top 10 finish in his last nine races.

"Very strange for me to come back to this sport after being gone so long and to see Kyle Busch struggling," Edwards said on Prime Video, via Mirror US.

"In my time in this sport, Kyle Busch literally was the guy to beat. I got to be his teammate for a while, got to see inside a little bit of how Kyle Busch operates. He is a stone-cold killer on the race track.

"This guy is amazing. So to be able to handle this part of his career the way he is, I think it shows a maturation, and I'm just hoping he can come out on the other side of this and do it for us old guys."

Edwards hopes Busch can refind his magic

Edwards continued: "He just needs to conjure up some of that Kyle Busch magic."

"I've been behind him and watched Kyle Busch pull off feats that leave me scratching my head.

"He's shown he can work wonders in a race car, and I really hope he can reclaim that magic."

Currently, Kyle Busch sits 19th in the points standings, but is on the brink of falling away from the playoff chase after two tough weekends.

In Mexico City, the No. 8 driver did not finish the race after an early wreck in the wet, and at Pocono, he could only finish 20th after a speeding penalty and a wreck made for a rough outing.

Busch currently sits below the playoff cut line by 63 points, with three drivers between himself and Alex Bowman in 16th at present.

With nine races to go in the regular season, just five spots remain up for grabs via points, and any new winners in the coming weeks will see that number decrease further.

If Busch doesn't make it, it will be the second consecutive season that he has not qualified for the Cup Series playoffs.
