Albon braced for Singapore "challenge" after recovery
Albon missed the Italian Grand Prix after undergoing surgery for appendicitis
Alex Albon has conceded the scale of the challenge ahead as he prepares to return to the cockpit after surgery for appendicitis.
The Thai-British driver was withdrawn from the Italian Grand Prix ahead of final practice as he was taken to hospital with concerns for his health.
He underwent laparoscopic surgery later that day but suffered “post-operative anaesthetic complications” that led to respiratory failure which required the driver to be placed in intensive care and on a mechanical ventilator.
Via social media, Albon thanked fans for the support while also underscoring his desire to be back in action in Singapore.
Nyck De Vries stood in for the 26-year-old in Italy and has travelled to Singapore. He will be on standby should Albon suffer any problems across the weekend.
"Firstly, I’d just like to thank everyone for all their messages and support over the Italian Grand Prix weekend," said Albon.
"My preparation for Singapore has been a little different than normal but I’m feeling good and I’ve done everything possible to get ready for one of the most physical races on the calendar.
"I am not underestimating how big of a challenge this is going to be, but I am looking forward to hitting the track on Friday and getting back driving.
"It’s a great street circuit and the closest race to home for me in Thailand, so I’m really excited to be here and to see the fans that have turned out."
