F1 "relentlessly" marching towards "extreme" 25-race calendar - Brundle
Former F1 driver Martin Brundle believes there is "no doubt" that F1 will contest an "extreme" 25-race season in the near future.
Through a combination of improved on-track action and the Netflix series Drive to Survive, F1 has seen its popularity skyrocket in recent years.
With this increased public interest, promoters from a number of countries and cities have increased their interest in hosting the sport, leading F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali to comment, "I would say there is potential to go to 30 [races]."
"I asked him that question on Sky F1 and there is no doubt we're going to 25 races which is extreme," Brundle told Sky Sports.
"I don't think it'll go to 30. I think the point he was making was that we could go to 30 races if there is that much interest. Formula 1 is going stratospheric at the moment.
"I think he was just making the point that we could easily do 25. In fact, if I wanted to, I could do 30.
"The regulations limit it to 24 at the moment but I think all the teams would agree, if there is more money to be had and more racing to be had, they will go to 25.
"Las Vegas will come on stream, Qatar comes on stream again next year and I know a lot of other countries are pushing like crazy [to join the calendar]."
Explaining the difficulty in adding new territories to the calendar without further bloating the schedule, Brundle added: "Those that have got a grand prix are renewing as fast as they can and others want to join the party.
"I think we're relentlessly going towards 25 which creates a lot of challenges, especially for those who have to do all of them."
