Hamilton "too nice" against "arrogant" Verstappen - Jordan

Former F1 team boss Eddie Jordan believes Lewis Hamilton was "too nice" going up against an "arrogant" Max Verstappen.

Verstappen won his maiden F1 world championship in dramatic style at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, making the most of a late safety car period to take a free pit stop and overcome rival Hamilton on the last lap.

It was only the second time since the turbo-hybrid era began in 2014 that Hamilton had failed to win the title after losing to Nico Rosberg in 2016.

There were various flashpoints between the Red Bull and Mercedes drivers throughout the season and Jordan pointed to Hamilton's weakness after the decider.

“Where I think Lewis has made a mistake…he’s become too nice a guy,” Jordan told Talksport.

“We all know that nice guys don’t win titles. You need to have that aggression and arrogant style which he did have.

“In recent weeks and years, he’s opened the door to somebody like Max Verstappen.

“He’s never raced somebody of his calibre before because we’ve never seen someone like him before. He’s just so dogged and arrogant when he’s racing, he’s powerful.

“I think Lewis was too sporting and too nice. He allowed Verstappen in and he took it.”
