Ricciardo's Renault requires chassis change due to hairline fracture
Renault has been forced to change the chassis on Daniel Ricciardo's car after it sustained a hairline fracture during practice for this weekend's British Grand Prix.
Ricciardo finished ninth quickest at Silverstone, just over eight-tenths of a second behind pacesetter Lance Stroll in his Racing Point, following what was a tricky day for all concerned given the hot, windy conditions. Team-mate Esteban Ocon was 12th, with a tenth of a second separating the duo.
It was later discovered the chassis had sustained the fracture, believed to have been incurred after Ricciardo caught one of the high kerbs around the circuit, leading to his team facing the additional work.
Overall, it was a hit-and-miss day for Ricciardo who said: "In terms of our running, we showed some promising signs but, on my side, we lacked a bit of consistency in the car. On some runs, I felt happier than others, so we have some work to do there."
Chief race engineer Ciaron Pilbeam also revealed Ricciardo's FP2 was further compromised by a tyre cut, arguably caused by the kerb issue that also led to the fracture.
Pilbeam said: "The morning session was fairly straightforward for us and we worked through a series of set-up options. Esteban’s afternoon session ran smoothly, but Daniel’s was not quite so smooth.
"He had a cut in one of his tyres, which limited what he could do in the second half of the session. We have good data on both short and long runs, which we’ll look through tonight and prepare for the rest of the weekend."
