Verstappen could quit Red Bull in 2020 - Coulthard

The 2020 Formula 1 season could be Red Bull's last chance to keep hold of Max Verstappen, according to David Coulthard.

Although Verstappen's stock continues to rise as a result of spectacular performances, Red Bull have struggled to give the Dutchman a consistently quick car and he is yet to properly feature in a battle for title glory in three full seasons with the team.

Verstappen's father, Jos, has suggested that a change of team will be sought if Red Bull cannot deliver a good enough car in 2020, when the 22-year-old's contract is set to expire.

And with Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton also seeing their contracts expire at the same time, as well as Hamilton being linked to a sensational witch to Ferrari, Verstappen could be a major player in the driver market.

"Max is one of the best drivers, but he has been limited somewhat by the car," Coulthard told De Telegraaf.

"It would be great for Formula 1 if the cars driven by Verstappen, Hamilton and Leclerc are all approximately equal – then we will see an exciting fight.

"But in the last six years, Mercedes has had the best car. I would really like to see Max stay at Red Bull, but I understand if he would want to leave if Red Bull and Honda cannot fight for the title in 2020.

"It's going to be a very important year for them."
