New York 'has no interest' in hosting Grand Prix
F1 commercial chief Sean Bratches has poured cold water on the idea of a New York Grand Prix at any point in the near future, claiming that the city has 'no interest' in hosting the race at this current time.
Liberty Media have been locked in discussions with a number of cities with a view to hosting street races there, with Hanoi, Buenos Aires, and Copenhagen being consulted in the past few months.
Miami has already been pencilled into the calendar for 2019, with the proposed route currently being drawn up, but it is thought that Liberty are keen to impose F1 on the US market as much as possible and have also identified Las Vegas as a potential stop-off.
Speaking on the KindredCast podcast, Bratches concurred with the idea of increased exposure of F1 in the US, but made it clear that the state authorities in New York have shown zero desire to host a race there.
He said: "New York was our idea for a period, but we will need a change in the leadership of the city for a similar project. At the moment they are not interested in a GP and therefore will re-discuss it in the future.
"We have set up a fan base, but our commitment will be limited to this."
The rejection from New York is in stark contract to other cities, who are scrambling for inclusion on an expanded race calendar which could jump from the current 21 races up to as many as 25 by the time Liberty's proposed changes take effect, from 2021 onwards.
It is unclear whether some current venues will be required to make way - Azerbaijan, despite having one of the most thrilling races of the season so far, is thought to be under threat as a result of Miami's inclusion.
