The 2026 Formula One campaign was always going to be an interesting one, with good expectations that it would shake the sport up for both the Race Teams, the Drivers themselves and fans alike, as everyone transitioned to the new electric hybrid power systems at play, along with the other regulatory tweaks that had previously taken place.

It seemed as the Grand Prix calendar passed by that Lewis Hamilton was again better enjoying his driving experience given the new challenges that the Ferrari set up provided him with (until the latest spat with Charles Leclerc), and recent serial winner Max Verstappen and the Red Bull team had to make rapid adjustments of their own given that it was quite apparent - quite quickly - that the 29 year old Dutch World Championship winner was no longer going to enjoy his usual dominance on the track.

The somewhat unexpected outcome for those who dabble with crypto betting F1 odds, was the full emergence of highly rated, and uber talented 20 year old, Kimi Antonelli. The Italian actually replaced seven time Championship winner Hamilton at Team Mercedes, and despite their struggles and mechanical issues in more recent years, they arguably made the better adjustment to the new power requirements as not only did Antonelli finish in top spot in the Formula 1 Standings, team colleague George Russell helped himself to fourth place.

Antonelli took 16 podiums and nine wins across the year, racking up 380 points, a clear 119 points clear of second placed Verstappen, with Russell clocking up 250 points, just nine shy of Hamilton in third spot, with eight podiums and three wins. It is Antonelli who will rightly take the headlines and the praise though, and much more is now expected from the young talent with his first title now under his belt - making him also the youngest World Champion in Formula 1 history.

It was quite right that the two most successful Champions on the current Grid (and two men sitting in first and third in the all time list of F1 winners) both greeted his achievement with the same word - 'incredible'. They know what many had long hoped when it came to Kimi - he is a star in the making, and his period of dominance is surely only a little bit of greater experience away. Sharing the podium with two storied winners such as Hamilton and Verstappen can only have added to the excitement and the feeling of achievement for the youngster - the talk of finally joining them on the main stage and then the symbolic elements of the potential baton being passed, belongs to others.

For those out there in the wider world of racing who had doubted the potential future success curve of Antonelli and questioned whether he was capable of reaching the top tier of the sport, will now also be surely reassessing their own opinions, and who could blame them.

But by the same token it is only one win, in a very strange year of transition for the sport and every team and driver will already know what they can improve on in the next calendar, so the question is, does Antonelli now consolidate and then, given there are certainly things he can still improve on given his tender age, really put the accelerator down to reach what many think he is capable of.
