The reigning world champion asserted his authority over the rest of the grid by finishing the 60-minute session ahead of Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso.
Verstappen's Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez - expected to be his nearest rival for Sunday's race - had a nightmare session for P6.
