Perez vows to win Mexican GP for Red Bull

Sergio Perez has vowed to win the Mexican Grand Prix with new team Red Bull when Formula 1 returns to the country in October.

The race held at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez succumbed to the global Covid-19 pandemic last season but returns later this year with the country's biggest star driving race-winning machinery.

Despite having only driven the RB16B in a filming day, Perez is confident he can become the first Red Bull driver other than Max Verstappen to take a race victory since Daniel Ricciardo won the Monaco Grand Prix in 2018.

“I am very much looking forward to being in Mexico," said Perez. "This is our national drink, Red Bull, right now. We are forgetting the tequila.

“Mexican’s are really enthusiastic and they love the team. I look forward to being in Mexico and winning the race for them.”

Last year, the Mexican Grand Prix was one of 13 grands prix cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic and Perez has insisted he will not take this year's running for granted.

He added: “I’m looking forward massively to getting people back, to basically get to a normal life as soon as possible, as soon as it is safe for everybody and just get the fans back into the grands prix.

“That will be something very special when that happens. I don’t know when that will happen but I have to say that that is the one I am most looking forward to.

“Obviously, to be back in my home country with my people will be very emotional once we have people in the grandstands and it will be something we appreciate more than in the past.”
