Alonso return "great news" for F1 - Carey
Formula 1 CEO Chase Carey has declared it "great news" that double world champion Fernando Alonso will return to the sport in 2021.
Rumours of Alonso's next F1 destination had begun before he had even left the paddock, with Mercedes, Ferrari, Racing Point, McLaren and Renault all having been mentioned.
“It’s great news that two time World Champion, Fernando Alonso, will return to Formula 1 with Renault next year," said Carey. "He is an incredible talent, and we can’t wait to have him back on the grid in 2021.”
By the time the Spaniard returns in 2021, he would have been without a drive in F1 for two years, but despite this, his stock remains high within the sport.
During his time away, Alonso has competed in the World Endurance Championship, the Indianapolis 500, the Dakar Rally, and several other events and competitions.
It is not then, as though Alonso returns having been away from motorsport and competition as a whole for two years.
For the Spaniard, the move is somewhat of a homecoming, returning to the team that carried him to both the 2005 and 2006 titles.
Alonso said: "Renault is my family, my fondest memories in Formula One with my two World Championship titles, but I’m now looking ahead. It’s a great source of pride and with an immense emotion I’m returning to the team that gave me my chance at the start of my career and which now gives me the opportunity to return to the highest level."
