Pirelli announce softer tyres for Silverstone race two

Pirelli announce softer tyres for Silverstone race two

Sam Hall

Pirelli has announced the tyre compounds that will be available to Formula 1 teams for the first eight races of the 2020 season.

For the two races in Austria at the Red Bull Ring, Pirelli will once again utilise the C2, C3 and C4 tyre compounds - C1 being the hardest tyre in the range and C5 the softest.

The pattern of running the same compounds as 2019 continues throughout, with C2, C3 and C4 also being used in Hungary and Italy, while the C1, C2 and C3 will feature in Spain and Great Britain.

However, changes have been made at two races, with the Belgian Grand Prix a Spa Francorchamps seeing tyre choices one step softer than 2019, the C2, C3 and C4 available, while the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, the second of two races at Silverstone, will also see softer compounds available.

These changes may result in faster qualifying times, potentially seeing records tumble at both Spa and Silverstone, but, with a larger focus on tyre management, could also result in teams having to choose between stopping multiple times in the race, or lapping slower to conserve tyre life.
