Hamilton determined to drive 2021 F1 cars
Lewis Hamilton says he is determined to keep going in Formula 1 into 2021 and beyond after seeing the FIA's projections for how the new regulations will improve racing.
A new era of F1 is expected to dawn in 2021, with ground effect aerodynamics and other tweaks set to be introduced – all with the intention of making cars easier to follow by reducing the 'dirty' air thrown out as they travel.
Hamilton had previously said he would not commit to F1 until he was convinced that the 2021 regulations were to his liking and has expressed concern that cars will continue to get heavier under the new rules.
But with F1 claiming that cars will only lose 10% of downforce in the wake of a rival – compared to 50% now – Hamilton seems up for the challenge, praising the FIA and F1 for including drivers in the process.
"It's been a huge step for us to be involved, it's a big step for all the drivers to be united," he said.
"We're building a new and better relationship with the FIA, and I think they've been quite open.
"There are things that we ask about and they are like 'we can't change it now', but there's no such thing as 'can't' for an engineer.
"There's lots of things that can be improved but the thing they did show us the other day is that the amount that you lose behind a car today and what their simulations say that we will lose in terms of downforce behind the new car.
"I think it looks great, so I'm working as hard as I can to make sure I can stay around for then and get to drive those newer cars."
