British Grand Prix reprieve for Red Arrows after F1 ban
F1 has put an end to military air displays for 2022
Silverstone has confirmed the Red Arrows will continue to feature at the British Grand Prix despite F1's ban on military air displays for the coming season.
In a bid to distance itself from potential geopolitical statements or posturing, F1 has put an end to pre-race aeronautical displays featuring military aircraft.
Although known as the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows, which uses Hawk T1 training jets, has been cleared to continue its displays by the sport.
“The Red Arrows have played a significant part in entertaining motorsport fans since they first performed at the British Grand Prix in 1966 and I am pleased to say that Formula 1 has confirmed this much-loved tradition can continue at Silverstone in 2022,” said Silverstone in a statement.
“The Red Arrows, officially known as the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, are not classed as military aviation and, as such, do not fall into the category of those displays that will no longer be permitted at Formula 1 events. We look forward to welcoming them back to Silverstone on 3 July.”
Air displays featuring civilian aircraft, such as those seen in the Middle East where national airlines complete a flypast, will be permitted to continue but under the stipulation that sustainable fuels are used.
This is a part of F1's commitment to being carbon neutral by 2030.
The Red Arrows also appear to have secured an exemption from this ruling, with the display team committed to becoming carbon neutral through the use of sustainable and synthetic fuels by 2040.
