Gasly insists Red Bull frustration not aimed at Perez
Gasly insists Red Bull frustration not aimed at Perez
Pierre Gasly has reiterated his belief his performances with AlphaTauri this season should have granted him a "better chance" of securing a return to Red Bull but insisted his frustration at missing out was not vented towards Sergio Perez.
Gasly has been a standout performer this year with multiple appearances in the top six for AlphaTauri on pure merit, collecting a podium in Azerbaijan and sitting ninth in the drivers' standings.
The Frenchman was disgruntled with Red Bull overlooking his services for 2022 as the team opted to continue with Perez, saying he was left to "wonder why" he was not given a second chance.
Clearing up the suggestion of angst towards Perez, who was sat beside Gasly in the FIA drivers' press conference, he explained: "I think to put everything back in the right space, nothing was related to Sergio.
"It was more my case and my relationship with Red Bull in my personal contract and for my future."
Focusing on his personal grievances, Gasly continued: "I think I have performed at a very good level at Toro Rosso [AlphaTauri], better than I did in 2018 when I was given the opportunity and performing at a better level, more experienced.
"I felt that based on this year I could have deserved a better chance, but that is the decision, it doesn't stop my motivation.
"Being in Sergio's position, as part of a career perspective, my goal is to be in Red Bull and it is no surprise that I want to be in a car which allows me to fight for wins and podiums.
"That will be my target because that is what I am working for every morning, working on myself, trying to be a better driver, trying to win races and that is the goal.
"They have made their decision, I am happy for them, they are having a very successful season.
"I will keep pushing and try to get my chance in the future because that is what I want - I want to fight for a world championship."
