Gasly-Tsunoda AlphaTauri continuation gets Tost thumbs up
AlphaTauri team principal Franz Tost has given his vote of confidence to Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda to continue with the team into 2022.
AlphaTauri has yet to confirm which drivers will feature in its lineup into the new aerodynamic era of F1, but Tost has confirmed he would prefer stability in the ranks for the first time since 2013.
"If I were to decide, I would like to continue with the drivers we have," Tost told GPFans Global.
"The fruits regarding Yuki Tsunoda, the team will earn in the next year's because this year is a rookie year.
"The second half of the season he doesn't really know any racetrack. He has never been to America. He was not in Mexico. He was not in Sao Paolo, he was not in Saudi Arabia, so it will be a difficult one.
"Nevertheless, this is what we knew from the beginning onwards. But he is making progress, he understands the car much better now.
"He is getting a better overview about the technical side of the car, the tyres, management, and so on. It's a learning process, but he is making good progress."
At the summer shutdown, AlphaTauri is sixth in the standings, one place higher than it ended the 2020 season.
Assessing the merits of his two drivers, Tost added: "We have with Pierre Gasly, a top driver. He is an experienced driver and he is leading the team, especially on the technical side.
"With Yuki, we have a rookie who is very fast, is high-skilled, and if everything goes together, he can score more points this year. This combination helps has brought us to this position."
