Alonso expresses personal "cautious" concerns ahead of Monaco GP
Fernando Alonso is confident Alpine will be fast in Monaco but has revealed he needs to overcome personal "caution" if he is to underline that around the Principality.
The Spanish driver showed improved qualifying performance at his home grand prix most recently, reaching Q3 for the second time this season, only to slip back in the race after a gamble on tyre strategy.
With Alpine looking strong across the Iberian double-header in Portugal and Spain, Alonso expects another positive weekend in Monaco but only if he can perform on Saturday.
"I think the car will be pretty fast in Monaco," predicted Alonso. "The car will be pretty good.
"One of the things I need to get better for sure is to extract the maximum from the car over one lap, having the confidence in the car and what it is doing and I am not 100 per cent on that at the moment.
"In Monaco, it is crucial that I get the maximum out of the car on Saturday. I remain a little cautious because of my own work rather than the car.
"I feel confident in the car, now I need to work myself to be comfortable as well. It is up to me. Let's try."
With Barcelona notorious for being the benchmark for car performance due to the all-around nature of the track, Alonso believes Alpine has a better idea as to where it lies in the pecking order.
"We had some good answers on some [areas] of the performance of the car and of the competitors," he added.
"I was more or less comfortable. We have more pace in qualifying than the race, to be honest.
"The race was even tighter than in qualifying because things were very very similar on the performance of the other cars."
