Penske: Ferrari 'interested' in 2022 IndyCar spot

Talks between Formula 1 team Ferrari and the IndyCar Series have taken place, according to Roger Penske.

IndyCar owner Penske has welcomed the discussions with the Scuderia, telling SiriusXM radio that Ferrari involvement would be good for the series.

“Obviously we’re looking at potentially adding other manufacturers," said Penske.

“You probably heard it, there’s been discussions with Ferrari, [who] might be interested in joining the series, coming in 2022 when we have the new engine rules, and that would be a great asset to have a third manufacturer in the series.”

The news comes after Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto suggested that the team would look at the series following Formula 1's budget cuts.

With Formula 1 introducing a budget cap for 2021, starting at $145million but continually reducing, Ferrari have been looking at ways of redistributing their workforce, rather than letting them go. IndyCar appears to meet this objective.

Former F1 and IndyCar champion Mario Andretti previously expressed his desire to see his former team move across the pond.

"I suggest Binotto comes and proposes an idea to Roger Penske. Having Ferrari [in IndyCar] would be incredible,"
