Miami GP: How we got here, will the race ever happen?
Miami GP: The story so far
January 2019: The deal agreed between Miami and F1 leads to promoters of other circuits clubbing together to criticise Liberty, who are also trying to keep the likes of Silverstone, Monza and Hockenheim on the schedule. The decision to offer Miami a deal with no hosting fee is a major issue as tracks facing financial problems fight to save their future.
April 2019: After many quiet months, hopes are raised that a decision may be reached in a meeting of the City Commission. Meanwhile, Liberty make progress with the 2020 calendar, confirming a deal in Vietnam, with Zandvoort set to follow.
The plans in Miami run aground, however, and it is confirmed that the plan for a race downtown has been scrapped, ending hopes of it being added to the 2020 calendar. However, the race promoters also own the city's biggest sporting arena, the Hard Rock Stadium, and attention now turns to the potential of that site.
July 2019: F1 confirms that Miami remains in its thoughts in other locations, with Liberty steadfast in its determination to add a second race in the United States to the calendar.
October 2019: F1 and the Hard Rock Stadium confirm plans for a race to be held around the sporting venue. The stadium's CEO claims the event will be held in May, with a statement claiming the race will be added to the F1 schedule from 2021.
