Red Bull: Gasly now has to deliver
Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko says Pierre Gasly must start delivering for the team, after dismissing his complaint over the behaviour of his car after the Austrian Grand Prix.
Gasly, despite having the same car, has been thoroughly outperformed by Max Verstappen this season, and finds himself sixth in the constructors’ championship some distance adrift of the five drivers ahead.
He has indeed suffered from a few engine issues in 2019, but, according to Marko, the Austrian GP in which he finished seventh was not one of these occasions.
“There was a bit of an excuse for Austria,” the Red Bull chief told Motorsport-Total.
“We burned all the front wings in the practice sessions, so he didn’t have the same front wing as Max, but that doesn’t explain the gap.
“It [the car] has to deliver now, but so does Gasly.
“He was always looking for issues with the car, in the chassis. We have looked through this. There was nothing.”
Marko did confirm, though, that Red Bull would continue to support their driver if he settles on a car set-up.
“The plan now is to support him as much as possible," he added.
"He gets Max’s set-up from the start, because he’s the more experienced driver and has the more experienced engineering team.
“He can mess around with it, but he can’t seriously move away from it – he was experimenting with his set-up before and jumping from one extreme to the other.”
Marko has defended Gasly numerous times this season, playing down any suggestions that Red Bull could replace him before the end of the campaign.
