Imagine you wait three years and 100 races for a NASCAR Cup Series win, and then some idiot tries to wreck it on the very last lap.

This appears to have been the scenario at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday as Bubba Wallace took the white flag. His lead over Kyle Larson was a precarious one, and he really did not need this…

The 31-year-old Wallace was already struggling to get to the finish in front with Larson all over him, so we imagine he was not happy at all when somebody threw a full beer can into the path of his No. 23 car.

The moment was clear to see on broadcast coverage (check out the social media clip below) as Wallace races towards the can, and comes very close to driving over it as he takes the white flag to signify just one lap remaining.

Putting the race and safety in jeopardy

If this wasn’t such a serious topic we’d probably point out that wasting beer is seldom a good thing, but really, what was this fan even thinking?

This isn’t just about the possibility of Wallace wrecking a tire and losing that long-awaited win, it’s a huge potential safety issue as well. With a train of cars involved, the possibilities here were pretty terrifying.

Thankfully we can put this down as a near miss rather than a horror wreck, and it remains a nasty footnote rather than the main story of the day. Bubba avoided disaster to end that winless streak and confirm a place in the Cup Series playoffs.

Wallace then definitely appeared to enjoy a drink after the race, judging by the shirtless photos of him chugging from a bottle at the team’s post-race party. What a win for him and Michael Jordan’s 23XI Racing. And what a way to silence all those critics.
