RFK Racing have reacted to the surprise departure of their long-time team president Steve Newmark.

Newmark will leave the team this summer to take up a senior position at the University of North Carolina, after a 15-year partnership with the team formerly known as Roush Fenway Racing.

The team's statement on the departure of their president was glowing, hailing his 'remarkable leadership' as he heads off to join Bill Belichick at UNC.

Newmark himself said in his own statement this week: "Now, it's time for a new chapter. I am heading back home to Chapel Hill to join one of the most respected and successful programs in college sports."

RFK respond to president's departure

RFK Racing's statement read: "RFK Racing extends its deepest gratitude to Steve Newmark for his remarkable leadership, vision, and steadfast dedication over the past 15 years.

"Steve has been instrumental in shaping the culture, growth, and success of our organization and his impact will be felt well into the future. While we are saddened to him step away from his role as president later this summer, we fully support his decision and are grateful, he will remain engaged through the transition.

"We wish Steve continues success at the University of North Carolina, and we look forward to building on the strong foundation he's provided."

RFK are running three cars in the Cup Series this year for the first time since 2016, with co-owner Brad Keselowski in the No. 6 car, Chris Buescher in the No. 17, and Ryan Preece in the No. 60, all pushing for a win which would put them into the postseason.
