FIA confirm Mercedes F1 star set for punishment at British Grand Prix

Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen collided at the Red Bull Ring

Mercedes F1 star Kimi Antonelli will serve a penalty at next weekend's British Grand Prix following a collision with Red Bull star Max Verstappen on Sunday.

Antonelli made a big error on the opening lap of the Austrian Grand Prix, locking up into turn three and slamming into Verstappen, putting an end to both of their races.

Antonelli quickly apologized to Verstappen as they both walked away from the track, and the young Italian accepted full responsibility for the incident post-race.

The race stewards agreed, with the FIA revealing that the Mercedes star will serve a three-place grid penalty for next weekend's race at Silverstone.

Alongside this, two penalty points have been added to Antonelli's super license, his first since joining the F1 grid at the start of the season.

Antonelli struggling for consistency

The young Mercedes star made a strong start to the season, too, picking up points in five of the opening six rounds of the season and even taking sprint pole at the Miami Grand Prix in May.

However, since then, results have been much harder to come by, with three retirements and a P18 in four of his last five races.

Of course, Antonelli did drive brilliantly at the Canadian Grand Prix earlier this month, picking up his first podium after a stellar drive at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, but recently, consistency has been a struggle.

Who knows what would have happened had he not collided with Verstappen, but Mercedes will certainly be looking for their young star to bounce back at Silverstone next weekend.
