NASCAR team make change to Cup Series lineup after Mexico City criticism

Hyak Motorsports appear to have made a change to Ricky Stenhouse Jr.'s race team for this weekend at Pocano.

Veteran Cup Series spotter Tab Boyd is not listed as Stenhouse Jr.'s spotter on the crew lists for this weekend's race at the Tricky Triangle, after coming under pressure for comments made on social media last weekend in Mexico City.

Boyd has over a decade of experience in the Cup Series, including a win at the Daytona 500, but was criticised for a now-deleted post on Twitter where he complained about the area he stayed in Mexico City for the first ever post-paying Cup Series race in the country.

The Hyak Motorsports man wasn't the only one to come under fire for comments made last weekend, with Carson Hocevar rounding off an unsuccessful weekend with a $50,000 fine from his team for disparaging comments made on a Twitch stream.

What was said about Mexico City?

Clayton Hughes, who spent a number of years as the spotter for another Jr. (Martin Truex Jr., specifically), is listed as Stenhouse Jr.'s spotter for this weekend.

Boyd, in a post since taken down, wrote: “I’m ready to go home, screw this place. People can talk it up all they want… can’t even walk out the front door of the hotel without getting hustled and money snatched… in less than five minutes. Good area my a–…”

Hocevar was, if anything, even stronger in his comments, saying: “This is how I’d put it, this whole experience.

"If the travel was better, if getting here was easier, if you felt safer getting to and from everywhere, if it wasn’t such a s**thole, if the track limits were a little better enforced, if it was gonna be a little bit better of a race, and it wasn’t so easy to...or feel so locked down like you can’t leave anywhere, it’d be a great experience.

GPFans has contacted Hyak Motorsports for comment.
