NASCAR star Denny Hamlin on baby watch as Michigan replacement update emerges

NASCAR star Denny Hamlin remains on baby watch ahead of this weekend's Cup Series race at Michigan International Speedway.

The driver of the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota and his fiancée, Jordan Fish, are expecting the birth of their third child and first son any day now.

It was revealed last weekend at Nashville that Ryan Truex was on standby at the track in case Hamlin had to exit at any point, with the driver having made it clear that his priority was to be there for his family rather than race.

However, in the end, Hamlin was able to race and then head home, with Fish having held out during the race weekend. Now, despite it being a week since Nashville, Fish is yet to give birth, meaning Hamlin could once again miss the race.

What is the latest on Denny Hamlin's baby watch?

It has been confirmed that Ryan Truex is once again on standby to step in and replace Hamlin at Michigan this weekend, and during qualifying, in which Hamlin finished third, Prime Video revealed the extreme measures he was taking to fulfil his obligations both in NASCAR and at home.

“Just to update on baby watch real quick," Prime Video's pit road reporter said after interviewing Hamlin. “Denny came to Michigan at 6 am this morning, no baby in the household yet.

“[He will be] leaving immediately after he qualifies, he’ll fly back [to Michigan] in the morning. So, no new Hamlin baby yet, but he will race tomorrow.”

However, post-qualifying, Hamlin himself addressed the situation, offering the very latest update.

"Just patiently waiting," Hamlin told a huddle of reporters at the track.

"I thought we'd be almost a week in by now, but just patiently waiting."

When asked if he would be leaving Michigan to head home, the No. 11 driver added: "Gonna wait to see where her symptoms are at, I've got some meetings and whatnot here first, so after that's over, see where her symptoms are at and if she has any then certainly we'll go back."

Hamlin was even asked if he could leave during the race, if the call came, to which he responded: "It just depends on the urgency of it. But I'm going to leave the call entirely up to her."

The Joe Gibbs Racing star also revealed that he would be willing to skip next weekend's race in Mexico City if he had to should Fish not give birth before then.
