Alfa Romeo predict "big surprises" in new F1 era

Alfa Romeo team principal Frédéric Vasseur has predicted there could be some "big surprises" as F1 enters its new era.

F1 will race to a set of radically new aerodynamic regulations this year with the sport placing a greater focus on creating closer racing through the use of ground-effect technology.

Last year, teams were restricted in the number of large changes that could be made to their cars but freedom with regard to smaller changes saw some teams spend longer upgrading their 2021 machinery than others.

In a post-season interview with GPFans, Vasseur explained: "You could move from P6 to P17 from one week to the other.

"I think it was good for the media and it was also the good point of the season that you had the mega-fight on the top and then from P3 to almost last but not last, but almost last.

"Everything could turn, that you are the also doing Q3 where you had Ferrari or Aston stopping in Q1.

"It was the good point of the world championship last season. It means that starting from scratch this year, you could also have big surprises."

Despite his belief that the coming season will throw up some unexpected results, Vasseur added: "I don't think that we will fight with Mercedes in Bahrain."
