Red Bull 'went backwards' despite Baku practice one-two - Verstappen

Max Verstappen will look for answers after he felt Red Bull "went a bit backwards" during second practice for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix despite finishing one-two.

The Dutch driver was just a tenth of a second slower than team-mate Sergio Perez at the Baku City Circuit and only 0.027secs faster than Carlos Sainz for Ferrari, with championship rivals Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton down in 11th.

After topping the morning session, Verstappen believes the set-up changes made between sessions affected his potential pace.

"Performance-wise, we had a great start to the weekend so far," said Verstappen. "FP1 felt really decent, I was quite comfortable.

"For FP2 we made a few changes to see if it would be better but I think we went a bit backwards so we will look overnight for what direction we are going into.

"Nevertheless, for the team, we still had a very good day. It was pretty windy. Of course, it is never easy but it is not easy for all of us. It makes driving around here more interesting.

"So far I think we look pretty strong as a team and I’m very happy with that so let’s see what we can do tomorrow.”
