Craig David to feature in new McLaren esports series
The first race of the VELO ESERIES will be contested on February 6
McLaren has launched the VELO ESERIES with DJ and singer Craig David set to headline the first round of the four-part competition.
The event, which will be presented by former Top Gear host Rory Reid, will pit celebrities against "internet sensations", starting with David taking on Supercar Blondie on January 9.
VELO, a nicotine pouch manufacturer and McLaren sponsor, aims to increase brand awareness through the series and will engage fans by "giving them the opportunity to participate and race against celebrities with a host of exclusive prizes up for grabs, including VELO-branded racing overalls, gloves and games consoles".
David revealed time spent at the McLaren Technology Centre has prepared him well for taking on Supercar Blondie.
He said: “Hanging out at McLaren’s HQ was an incredible experience where they properly put me through my paces with F1 training and simulator practice - hopefully I’ll have some major skills going into the virtual race.
"A huge thank you to all the team there and at VELO for allowing me to be part of this eracing series!”
The first race will be broadcast live on VELO's YouTube channel at 1pm GMT on February 6.
“McLaren and VELO share a similar passion for putting fans at the heart of engaging experiences," said Mark Waller, McLaren Racing chief commercial officer.
"It’s great to kick-off the New Year while we wait for the new Formula 1 season to get underway with this exciting new eracing initiative.
"Fan engagement continues to be more important than ever during these times so it’s great to work with our partners to develop fantastic experiences like this.”
