Ferrari to inform Haas of identity of junior promotion in two weeks
Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto has revealed only one of its academy drivers is to be promoted to Haas for the 2021 Formula 1 season.
The Scuderia has three drivers in the running, with Mick Schumacher the favourite ahead of Callum Ilott and Robert Shwartzman, for one of the vacancies at Haas following the axings of Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean.
Schumacher currently leads the F2 championship from Ilott going into the final four rounds in Bahrain and Abu Dhabi, with both competing in their second and final season in the series. Shwartzman is in his first year and is likely to continue his education in 2021.
"Our objective is not to bring them in F1, it is to bring them one day to Scuderia Ferrari, to the red car," said Binotto about the trio. "What will be the path to achieve it, that’s less important.
"There will be eventually one of the drivers that can have a seat in F1 next year. The others will have other opportunities, and that’s down to us to organise it and to give all of them an opportunity."
Asked whether a decision will be influenced by whoever claims the F2 championship, Binotto countered by revealing the call will have already been made before then.
"I don’t think we will wait for the final race in Bahrain and for Abu Dhabi then," he continued. "I think it’s something we may decide within the next couple of weeks."
