Kubica says he will be racing again in 2020

Robert Kubica expects to be in a race seat, whether in Formula 1 or elsewhere, in 2020, having confirmed that he will not race for Williams next year.

In his first season back in F1 after recovering from life altering injuries for the previous eight years, things have not gone to plan for Williams or Kubica, who has the struggling team's only point of the season so fa but has been largely outperformed by rookie team-mate George Russell.

Kubica's sponsors PKN Orlen were reported to have met with Racing Point recently, with a view to the one-time grand prix winner potentially taking on a development role, similar to the job he held at Williams in 2017 before his promotion to the race line-up.

However, the 34-year-old has also been linked with a race seat in DTM and says he is not ready to hang up his racing gloves just yet.

"It was my decision, so of course I know there are some consequences which then Orlen follows my decision but this is a completely different topic," Kubica said of his sponsor's influence in his Williams exit.

"It has been only, purely, my decision."

He added: "I don't want to go too much into the details but, as I said, I will evaluate different opportunities.

"I will be very surprised if I was doing only simulator. I will be very surprised if I will not be racing next year."

Kubica says he needs an injection of joy back into his racing life, having endued a miserable 2019, which has seen him qualify slowest 13 times and finish last in 10 races.

He said: "I said that this year it would be a goal to remain in Formula 1. Of course my answer would be yes [I want to stay in F1], but not at any cost.

"And I think I have to first of all do what will bring me back a bit of joy in racing."
