Sky Sports and Channel 4 strike new coverage deal

Sky Sports and Channel 4 have agreed a new Formula 1 race coverage package which will see the sport’s presence on free-to-air broadcast continue in the United Kingdom until 2024.

Ahead of the 2019 season, Sky Sports had exclusive coverage, only for Channel 4 to strike a deal to show the British Grand Prix at Silverstone as well as limited highlights of other races on the calendar.

Had that deal not been agreed, there would have been no way for non-Sky subscribers to legally watch races.

This week, both parties have confirmed that a new, extended agreement has been made, which will last for the next four seasons.

"This landmark new partnership with Sky is a fantastic example of how broadcasters can work together to extend the reach of our content and innovate for the benefit of both viewers and advertisers," said Channel 4 executive Alex Mahon.

"I'm particularly thrilled that we are extending our collaboration with Sky on Formula 1, which secures highlights of all races and live coverage of the British Grand Prix on free-to-air television."

There is not believed to have been a great deal of alterations made to the current deal, with Channel 4 set to receive around the same restricted coverage as before.
