Sainz makes Ferrari debut in Fiorano test

Sainz makes Ferrari debut in Fiorano test

Sam Hall

Carlos Sainz has taken to the track for the first time in Ferrari colours in a private test at Fiorano.

Driving the same 2018 SF71H used by team-mate Charles Leclerc on Tuesday, Sainz will complete a full day of running today before returning to the track on Thursday morning.

The Spaniard joined the Scuderia from McLaren and, with pre-season testing reduced to just three days this year, time which must be divided between both drivers, these sessions will prove invaluable in bringing the Spaniard up to speed with the working practices of Ferrari.

Ferrari is the fourth team Sainz will race for in Formula 1, having previously driven with Toro Rosso, Renault and McLaren.

Last year his 119 points were invaluable to McLaren as the team finished third in the constructors' standings, its highest position since 2012.

In contrast, Ferrari endured its worst campaign since 1980, finishing seventh.
