Alonso feared jinxing Ricciardo's Nürburgring podium
Fernando Alonso has revealed to typing a congratulatory message to Renault ahead of Sunday's chequered flag at the Nürburgring but waited to hit send so as not to jinx the result.
Following his return to the track in a filming day with Renault this week, Alonso was mindful of inadvertently costing the team its first podium in nine years by sending his good tidings too soon.
"I was waiting for the last lap," said the Spaniard. "I was so happy for everyone.
"I wrote the message and then had my finger on send until Daniel crossed the line. I didn’t want to send it in case for luck reasons!"
Although not yet an official part of the team, Alonso is already taking part in debriefs, while also following both Ricciardo and Esteban Ocon throughout the duration of each race.
"I watch all the races from home," confirmed Alonso. "I have a nice set up.
"I have a computer that the team gave to me a couple of weeks ago so that I can follow Esteban’s onboard car camera, Daniel’s camera as well.
"I can follow the radio communications from the team, the debriefs and all of the strategy meetings, so yeah, I know what is happening every weekend.
“As I said before, I know the results are getting better and better. The podium in the last race was a very deserved podium finally for the hard work."
