No warning for Vettel ahead of Ferrari engine failure
No warning for Vettel ahead of Ferrari engine failure
Sebastian Vettel has stated the engine failure that brought an early end to his Friday running at Silverstone caught him by complete surprise.
With six minutes remaining in FP2 ahead of the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix, Vettel suffered an engine failure which resulted in his SF1000 leaving oil on the track before he pulled over on to a grass verge at Silverstone.
Asked if there were any warning signs, Vettel said: "No, no warning.
"[It was] Very sudden and it was obviously a failure, so now we have to see what it is but it will probably take a couple of days because the engine will get shipped back [to Maranello] and analysed."
Across the two Friday sessions, Vettel again struggled to match team-mate Charles Leclerc, ending the day only 14th fastest and almost half-a-second slower.
In last weekend's British Grand Prix, in which Vettel struggled throughout with a variety of issues, the four-time F1 champion laboured to 10th in the race itself while Leclerc claimed his second podium of the season by finishing third.
Assessing another difficult day behind the wheel of his car, Vettel commented: "I think overall we were a little bit happier but not really more competitive, so we will have to look.
"I think we can still try and improve the car from where it is now, but probably small things and then hopefully we’ll be a bit more competitive."
