'Scooter youth' blamed for fire at Dutch GP circuit

A fire at Formula 1 circuit Zandvoort on Tuesday evening has been blamed on 'scooter youth'.

Dutch police are currently seeking witnesses to the incident in which a number of tyre stacks, that ordinarily would have been used for barrier protection, were set alight.

Thick plumes of black smoke could be seen for miles away from the track that is situated on the coast, 20 miles east of Amsterdam. Fire crews eventually brought the blaze under control.

Circuit director Robert van Overdijk indicated to local newspaper Haarlems Dagblad that the fire was started by what he has described as 'scooter youth'.

The Dutch Grand Prix at the circuit should have returned to the F1 calendar in May after a 25-year absence but was cancelled owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.
